Essential oils have been getting a lot of buzz recently. Since Covid struck and levels of uncertainty and anxiety have soared for many, there has been a huge interest in products and practices that make you feel good, the little daily rituals that get you through the challenging times.
Aromatherapy ticks a lot of boxes, including 100% natural ingredients, sustainability and evidence-based wellbeing benefits. Here's a quick little run down of how it all works.
What are essential oils?
Essential oils are basically plant extracts. They're made by steaming or pressing various parts of a plant (flowers, bark, leaves or fruit) to capture the compounds that produce fragrance.
What is aromatherapy?
In a nutshell, aromatherapy is a form of holistic healing using essential oils and natural plant extracts to help create emotional, spiritual, psychological, and physical balance.
How does it work?
When a person inhales an essential oil, the scent is carried by olfactory nerve cells in the nose to the olfactory system, which then sends the aroma to the brain, namely the limbic system, the house of emotions and emotional behavior such as intimacy, passion and sex. Immediately, and depending on the oil, you may begin to feel more alert or more relaxed. You may feel excited and aroused. You may feel the release of negative emotions and/or the soothing of muscle tension. Mood enhancers like serotonin and endorphins get released
Candles that use pure essential oil as fragrance, not only smell amazing but also make you feel amazing.
